World Youth Skills Day: why is investing in apprentices an investment in the future?
Every year on 15th July, World Youth Skills Day shines a spotlight on the importance of equipping young people with the skills they need to succeed in the workplace, and whilst yes, qualifications will certainly always play an important role, today’s employers are increasingly recognising that some of the most valuable skills simply can’t be learned in a classroom.
In truth, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, resilience and confidence are all developed through real-world experience, which is exactly why apprenticeships continue to play such an important role in helping young people begin successful careers.
Apprenticeships are in fact far more than an opportunity to recruit new talent. For many businesses, seen as an investment in the future of the organisation itself, and many organisations today firmly believe that by giving young people the opportunity to learn, grow and develop from day one, they can build highly skilled teams, develop future leaders and create a culture where people are supported to achieve their potential.
At S&G Response, we’ve seen first-hand just how powerful that investment can be, and it’s something that’s incredibly close to our core as a business. But what is it that makes us feel that way, and why is it that we see investing in apprentices as an investment in the future?
Learning by doing
Every career must start somewhere, and for many young people, beginning a first job can feel daunting.
Entering a professional environment, learning new systems and understanding how a business operates all happen at once, and it’s what makes those first few months so critical, but it’s also exactly why apprenticeships help bridge that gap, as they work to combine practical, hands-on experience with recognised qualifications, allowing individuals to develop knowledge whilst making a genuine contribution to the business from the very beginning.
As a result, an apprentice turns from being a someone learning about the workplace, to being embraced as a real part of it, and it allows young people to build confidence through real experiences, gain exposure to different departments, develop professional relationships and gradually take on greater responsibility, all whilst being supported by experienced colleagues around them too.
Creating careers, not just jobs
One of the greatest strengths of an apprenticeship is that it doesn’t simply prepare someone for their first role, it can shape an entire career.
We can speak from experience here at S&G, as many of today’s leaders first joined the business as apprentices themselves.
Take Danielle Williamson, for example.
As one of our very first apprentices, Danielle began her career within our apprenticeship programme before being promoted to Claims Handler within our Fix Auto team. From there, she progressed into a Team Leader role before becoming one of our Service Delivery Managers within our Operations department, and her achievements were recognised nationally in 2023 when she received the MCA Rising Star Award.
Here, Danielle’s journey demonstrates what’s possible when ambition is matched with opportunity and the right support.
But she’s certainly not alone!
Luke Peers joined as an apprentice in 2017 before progressing to Claims Handler and later Team Leader within our Supply Chain department, and after gaining valuable experience with one of our trusted partners, Luke returned to the business in January 2023, and has recently been promoted to Supply Chain Manager as a result of his incredible performance.
Reflecting on his own apprenticeship journey, Luke commented that, “Completing my apprenticeship was a key step in shaping my career, giving me both the practical skills and confidence to progress into a leadership role… the support from S&G throughout, particularly from mentors and the wider team, made a real difference in helping me develop and succeed.”
It makes us incredibly proud to hear Luke’s comments, and his experience highlights something that’s difficult to measure but invaluable to any organisation; confidence.
But not just any confidence.
The type of confidence to take on new challenges, lead teams and continue developing throughout a career.
A confidence that is second to none, and one that began to grow the moment he started his apprenticeship with us back on Day 1.
And a confidence that will stay with him for life.
Success creates the next generation of mentors
Perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of apprenticeships is how success often comes full circle, especially as many former apprentices go on to support those following in their footsteps, passing on the knowledge, encouragement and guidance that helped them succeed.
In fact, that’s exactly what happened for Maddy Spencer, one of our Team Leaders, whereby having joined S&G as an apprentice in 2018, she was able to gain experience across multiple areas of the business whilst completing their qualification.
Today, Maddy leads operational teams and has mentored 3 apprentices of her own. As she explains, “I started my apprenticeship with S&G Response in summer 2018, and by following the apprenticeship route I was able to gain experience in various areas of the business early on whilst also getting a qualification….with the support I received throughout I have been able to grow my confidence and progressed into my Team Leader role, a little under 3 years ago where I have overseen different areas of our operations, and I have also had 3 apprentices that I have been able to guide down the same path that I followed, enabling me to encourage them to become the best versions of themselves.”
To us, it’s stories like this demonstrate that investing in apprentices creates far more than individual success, and it proves that apprenticeships really can create future mentors, future leaders and future role models.
In fact, we’ve also seen several AAT apprentices go on to build successful careers across the finance profession too, further demonstrating that apprenticeships can provide a strong foundation across a wide range of specialist disciplines.
And the best bit?
That these success stories all have one thing in common.
Each individual was given the opportunity to learn, develop and progress within a supportive environment that recognised potential rather than simply prior experience.
Each one of them started as an apprentice, and their successes have been immeasurable.
Investing in the future
As industries continue to evolve, attracting and retaining skilled people has never been more important, and the truth is that developing talent internally allows businesses to shape future skills, strengthen succession planning and build teams that understand both the organisation and its culture.
That’s exactly why apprenticeships continue to be such an important part of our own people strategy, and today we’re so proud to support 8 apprentices across our Halifax and Wilmslow offices, all completing Level 3 Business Administration qualifications, alongside a specialist Motor Vehicle Engineering apprentice studying at Blackpool College.
Each represents the next generation of talent that will help shape our business in the years ahead, and so, as we near closer to World Youth Skills Day, we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young people, and also serve the reminder that businesses really do have te opportunity to create meaningful careers.
At S&G Response, we believe that by investing in apprentices, organisations aren’t simply filling vacancies, they’re developing confident professionals, future leaders and skilled colleagues who will continue to strengthen their teams for years to come.
To us, there’s nothing that makes us more proud than watching our apprentices grow into experienced professionals, supportive mentors and inspirational leaders, so much so that we firmly agree, as an entire business, that it’s one of the clearest demonstrations that investing in people is always worthwhile.
After all, whilst skills may open the door to opportunity, it’s the support, encouragement and belief shown along the way that helps people truly realise their potential.
